Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- Third-party insurance is required to kitesurf anywhere in the Southend area. Carry proof.
- Launch from the designated kite area — the grass between the boom and the slipway.
- The beach faces south-east, which is unique on this stretch and is why it works when Thorpe Bay doesn't.
- At low tide you can be walking over a mile out to reach the water, and the same back. Factor that into your session.
- The boom marks the MOD range boundary. Do not ride east of it.
- Thorpe Bay a couple of miles west is the alternative when the wind is more westerly.

The spot
Shoebury East Beach is the Thames Estuary's best-organised kite spot and the nearest reliable wind to London — an hour and a quarter by car, or a direct train from Fenchurch Street. It has a formally designated kite area with a large grass launching and landing zone between the boom and the slipway, which is a genuine luxury on this coast.
Uniquely on this stretch, the beach faces south-east. That opens up wind directions the rest of the Southend shoreline cannot use, and means it works when Thorpe Bay a couple of miles west does not.
The tide is the catch. Ninety minutes either side of high water is the window to avoid, and at low tide there is a lagoon out there but you may be walking more than a mile over mud to reach it. The boom marks the MOD Shoeburyness range boundary — do not ride east of it. Third-party insurance is required across the Southend area.
