Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- Kites are effectively excluded from the main beach through the summer season. This is an out-of-season spot.
- It faces west, so the prevailing south-westerly is onshore and messy. Wait for a north-westerly to northerly; anything with east in it is offshore.
- Serious Atlantic beach break with strong rips. Not a spot to be underpowered on.

The spot
Woolacombe is one of the best-known surf beaches in the South West, which is precisely the problem for kiting: through the season it is covered in RNLI bathing and surfing zones and kites are effectively excluded from the main beach.
Out of season it becomes a genuinely good wave spot. It faces west, so a north-westerly to northerly is the direction to wait for; the prevailing south-westerly is close to onshore and messy, and easterlies are offshore. Rips are strong at both ends of the bay and the beach break carries real power on an Atlantic swell.
