Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- You must hold membership of a governing body with third-party liability cover — BKSA (£10m), RYA (£5m) or UKWA (£5m) — and carry the card. Parking attendants and seafront rangers check.
- Launch and recover south of the Royal Sands car park. That is the designated area.
- Twelve metres of tidal range. The sea comes in across the flats faster than you can comfortably walk. Know the tide before you go on the sand.
- Council guidance is explicit that the bay suits intermediate to advanced riders only — this is not a learning beach.
- No lifeguard service operates at any North Somerset beach. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
- Maintain at least 50m from any other water user, and never jump with less than 50m clearance. Three short siren blasts from the shore means you are too close to someone.

Tide rule
The tide moves faster than you can walk. Never be on the sand without knowing which way it is going. Over twelve metres of spring range — the second largest on earth. At low water the sea is more than a mile out; on the flood it returns across the flats at walking pace or faster.

- medium
sharp objects Soft mud and sinking sand in places, particularly towards the river channels.
- medium
pollution The water is heavily silt-laden and visibility is effectively nil.

The spot
Weston Bay sits in the Bristol Channel, which has the second-largest tidal range on the planet at over twelve metres on springs. At low water the sea is more than a mile out across hard, flat sand. On the flood it returns faster than you can comfortably walk. That single fact governs everything about riding here.
North Somerset Council runs the bay formally. Kitesurfers must hold membership of a governing body providing third-party liability cover — British Kitesports at £10 million, RYA or UKWA at £5 million — and carry the card, which parking attendants and seafront rangers do check. Launching and recovery happen south of the Royal Sands car park. The council's own guidance describes the bay as suitable for intermediate to advanced riders and no one else.
There is no lifeguard service anywhere on the North Somerset coast. The council recommends a charged phone in a waterproof pouch, a PLB or VHF, and the RYA SafeTRX app. Keep 50 metres from other water users; three short siren blasts from the shore means you are too close to someone.
