Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- You cannot just turn up and ride. The beach is privately owned and kitesurfing is restricted to members of the 2XS club — currently around £360 a year plus a setup fee.
- Kite buggying and land yachting are no longer permitted anywhere on the West Wittering Estate, including the beach.
- If you want these conditions without the membership, go to East Wittering or Bracklesham a mile east. Bigger waves at low to mid tide, fewer amenities, far fewer people.
- The ebb out of Chichester Harbour beside East Head is genuinely strong. Do not drift towards the spit.

Tide rule
Mid-tide is when the offshore banks do the most good. The East Head spit and the Chichester Harbour entrance create strong tidal streams — the ebb runs hard out of the harbour.

The spot
West Wittering has the conditions everyone wants: offshore sandbanks that knock the chop flat, standing-depth water, and a clean south-westerly across the whole bay. It also has the tightest access rules in British kitesurfing.
The beach is privately owned by the West Wittering Estate and kitesurfing is restricted to members of the 2XS club, at a cost of several hundred pounds a year. Kite buggying and land yachting have been prohibited on the estate entirely. None of this is negotiable at the beach — turning up without membership means not riding.
If that does not appeal, East Wittering and Bracklesham are a mile east and unrestricted. At low to mid tide they actually get bigger waves, and the lack of amenities keeps them far quieter. Wherever you ride on this stretch, treat the Chichester Harbour entrance beside East Head with respect — the ebb stream runs hard.
