Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- Only ride when the tide is low enough. The cliffs come down to the beach and a rising tide genuinely cuts sections off.
- The granite cliffs make the wind turbulent close in on easterly and offshore directions — it cleans up once you're out.
- Season here is really September to May. Summer brings bathing zones and crowds.
- The best all-round option in the Newquay area for someone still building confidence in Atlantic conditions.

The spot
Watergate Bay is the beach most people are pointed at when they ask where to kite near Newquay. Two miles of sand, decent facilities including showers and changing, and consistent Atlantic wind and swell.
The tide is the constraint, and it is a serious one: granite cliffs back the beach directly, so at high water there is very little sand and a rising tide can cut sections off with no way up. Ride the lower half of the tide. Those same cliffs make the wind turbulent close in on easterly directions.
The practical season is roughly September to May — summer brings bathing zones and a great many people.
