Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • Don't ride two hours either side of high water — choppy and no beach.
  • The lagoon at mid to low tide is the reason this beach has the reputation it does. Time your session for it.
  • The Mersey entrance is round the corner and the ebb through it is serious. Stay west of Fort Perch Rock.
  • Works on WSW round to NE. A south-westerly is side-off and gusty, and anything easterly is offshore.

The spot

Wallasey Beach at New Brighton is the North West's home spot. At mid to low tide a vast shallow lagoon forms across the sand — flat, standing-depth, and big enough for a school and a crowd of independents at the same time. Northern Kites is based here, which means there is usually someone about.

The rules are simple. Do not ride two hours either side of high water, when the water is choppy and there is no beach. Work the window from mid tide down. It runs on anything from west-south-west round to north-east; a south-westerly comes side-off and gusty, and easterlies are offshore and not worth the trip.

The Mersey entrance is immediately east past Fort Perch Rock and the ebb through it is serious, with heavy commercial and ferry traffic. Stay west of the headland.
