Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • The limestone reef across the bay is the defining hazard. It is sharp, extensive, and exposed at lower tides.
  • Nine metres of spring range in the Bristol Channel. Mid tide is the window.
  • Consistently the best-quality swell in South Wales, which is why it's the region's headline spot.
  • Watersports centre and café on site, and the car park is right behind the beach.

The spot

Rest Bay at Porthcawl is the headline spot in South Wales. It faces south-west into the Bristol Channel and picks up Atlantic swell filtered along it, with a watersports centre, showers and a car park directly behind the beach.

The limestone reef is what you need to know. It runs across the bay and is exposed at lower tides — flat, sharp and easy to hit at speed. With over nine metres of spring range there is a lot of tide to read, and mid tide is generally the sweet spot: enough water over the reef, enough sand to launch on.
