Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- Only ride when you can see the groynes. If they are underwater, so is the thing you are about to hit.
- The beach is formally zoned: teaching to the west by the outermost groynes, then the launch and freeride bays, then swimmers. Learn the layout before you rig.
- Lancing is the busiest teaching beach on the South Coast. On a good Saturday there will be several schools on the sand at once.
- Shoreham, two miles east, is the steeper and more powerful option when Lancing is too tame or too crowded.

Cross-onshore south-westerlies are the bread and butter; the South Downs behind can add gustiness in a northerly.
Tide rule
Ride when the groynes are visible — three to four hours either side of low water is the usable window. At high tide the beach is shingle only and the groynes are submerged, which is the dangerous combination.

The spot
Lancing sits two miles west of Shoreham and is where most of Sussex learns to kite. The beach shelves gently, the sand is exposed at lower tides, and the whole stretch is divided into zones: a teaching area at the western groynes, launch bays in the middle, and a swimming zone to the east.
The groynes are the thing. They run the length of the beach and disappear under the water at high tide, which is exactly when they become dangerous. The local rule is simple and worth following: ride when you can see them. That gives a usable window of three to four hours either side of low water.
In summer the beach picks up a modest sea breeze on top of the prevailing south-westerly. In winter it turns into a genuinely challenging spot, and most riders move two miles east to Shoreham for the extra punch.
