Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • Do not launch or land between the groynes. If something goes wrong you get dragged into concrete — this is the specific local warning.
  • Low tide, when the outer sandbar is exposed, is when this spot is genuinely excellent. As soon as the water creeps back towards the groynes, pack up.
  • Old Hunstanton a mile north is the better beach for most sessions. Use the main beach when you want the outer bar.

The spot

Hunstanton's main town beach is a low-tide spot. When the outer sandbar emerges the water inside it goes genuinely butter-flat, which is as good as east coast conditions get. As soon as the tide creeps back up towards the groynes it is time to pack up.

The groynes are concrete and the local warning about them is specific: do not launch or land between them, because if anything goes wrong you will be dragged into hard structure. Onshore westerlies here have caused more accidents than any other direction for the same reason.

For most sessions Old Hunstanton, a mile north, is the better beach. Come to the main beach for the outer bar.
