Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- Southerlies are offshore. The water inshore goes flat and inviting, and a self-rescue means drifting into the Solent shipping lane.
- Cowes Week and the summer racing calendar put hundreds of boats on this water. Check the sailing programme before you go.
- Rock ledges appear at low tide along parts of the beach.

The spot
Gurnard sits just west of Cowes on the island's north coast, looking across the Solent. It faces north-west, so it works on winds from west round to north-east, with a westerly running cross-shore along the beach.
Southerlies are the trap. They blow off the island and flatten the water inshore, which makes them look inviting, but they are offshore: a rider who goes down drifts into the middle of the Solent shipping lane, with Cowes and its ferry traffic immediately east. During Cowes Week and the summer racing season the water is full of boats. It is a good spot for a self-sufficient rider who has checked the sailing calendar and can get themselves back.
