Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • This is the northerly-wind alternative to Camber, five miles away. If the forecast is NE, come here; if it's SW, go to Camber.
  • Greatstone is more open than Camber and picks up more chop and small waves off the Channel — it is not the flat lagoon people expect.
  • Dungeness power station sits at the southern end of the beach. There is a permanent exclusion area around the outfall and its warm-water plume.
  • Parking on Coast Drive is free but fills by 10am on any decent summer weekend.

Flat marsh behind the beach means very little turbulence in anything with north in it.

Tide rule

Avoid roughly an hour either side of high water. The lower half of the tide is far more forgiving. High tide is rideable but the shore break makes it experienced-only.

Sea breeze · Apr–Sep

The same Romney Marsh flatland that drives Camber's sea breeze, though Greatstone faces east so the fill is more cross-shore than straight onshore.

Typically fills around 11:30, peaks around 15:00.

The spot

Greatstone is the beach the Camber locals drive to when the forecast turns north-easterly. The two sit five miles apart on either side of the Romney Marsh corner and between them they cover almost the whole compass. It is a big, open, dune-backed beach with hundreds of metres of hard sand at low water and no groynes to complicate a launch.

What it is not is a flat lagoon. Greatstone faces more squarely into the Channel than Camber and picks up noticeably more chop and small wind swell, particularly at the top of the tide when a shore break sets up against the steeper shingle. The lower half of the tide is where the spot earns its reputation.

The Dungeness headland and its power station mark the southern boundary. Stay north of it — there is a permanent exclusion zone around the cooling water outfall — and watch for red flags on the MOD ranges further up the coast.
