Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • Widely regarded as the best kite beach on the East Riding coast — sandy, spacious, and sheltered from the north by Flamborough Head.
  • In summer there is a restricted power-kite zone stretching north of the car park. Outside the summer season the whole beach is available.
  • The clay cliffs are actively eroding and drop debris, including old wartime concrete, onto the sand.
  • Very strong longshore drift here. You will end up downwind of where you started.

The spot

Fraisthorpe sits just south of Bridlington and has the best kitesurfing conditions on the long East Riding coast. It is a wide sandy beach with flat farmland behind it, so the wind arrives clean, and Flamborough Head to the north takes the edge off a hard northerly.

Through the summer a restricted power-kite zone operates north of the car park; the rest of the year the whole beach is open. The clay cliffs behind are actively eroding and drop debris including old wartime concrete onto the sand, and longshore drift along this coast is strong enough that you will finish well downwind of where you started.
