The spot
Elie and Shell Bay sit on the East Neuk of Fife, facing south across the Firth of Forth. That aspect is the point: in the southerlies that blow offshore on the north-facing Lothian beaches opposite, this side of the Forth is cross-onshore and clean.
Shell Bay to the west has the cleaner sand; there is rock and reef around Elie Ness and the harbour itself. It is a quiet, pretty stretch of coast with an active local sailing scene.
