Local rules, hazards & spot guide

Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • Use the designated launch and landing area shown on the map at the beach entrance. This is a condition of access, not a suggestion.
  • Stay west of an imaginary line from the golf clubhouse to the shipwreck. That keeps you clear of both the wreck and the Ternery.
  • Kitesurf tuition is strictly prohibited on Brancaster Beach. Do not book a lesson here.
  • The lagoons fill at around two-thirds tide and that is when the spot is at its best.
  • The access road to the car park floods on big high tides. Check before you park.
  • Fishing nets are set between the tide marks. At high water you can ride straight into them.

The spot

Brancaster is one of the finest flatwater beaches in eastern England and one of the most carefully managed. The National Trust owns it and access depends on riders using the designated launch and landing area marked at the beach entrance, and staying west of an imaginary line running from the golf clubhouse to the shipwreck — a line that keeps you clear of both the wreck and the Ternery breeding colony.

The conditions are worth the rules. Around two-thirds tide the lagoons begin to fill and the water goes flat across a huge area. Before that, the tidal range is big and the tides move fast; being cut off is a real and repeatedly warned-about risk, and the access road to the car park itself floods on big high tides.

Kitesurf tuition is strictly prohibited on this beach. Fishing nets are set between the high and low water marks — at high tide you can ride into them without seeing them.
