Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • Over ten metres of tidal range. The Bristol Channel streams here are among the strongest anywhere in the world.
  • Limestone ledges appear at low water. They are flat, sharp and easy to hit.
  • Steep pebble beach with deep water — not a learners' spot. Aberavon or Rest Bay are better options if you have the drive time.

The spot

The Knap is a steep pebble beach west of Barry Island, and the nearest coast to Cardiff. It works on a south-westerly and has easy roadside access.

The Bristol Channel is the thing to respect. Spring range here exceeds ten metres and the tidal streams are among the strongest in the world. Limestone ledges along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast are exposed at low water and are flat, sharp and easy to hit. With the time to drive, Aberavon or Rest Bay are considerably better spots.
