The spot

Barassie is the long sandy beach immediately north of Troon and the default spot for the whole Glasgow area. The water stays shallow a long way out, it works on any wind direction with west in it, and — unusually — at any state of tide. That combination is why the region's schools teach here.

It is also easy to reach: Barassie has its own railway station directly behind the beach, with direct services from Glasgow Central. Troon Harbour and the Arran ferry route sit at the southern end, so stay north of them. The water is Clyde-cold, rarely above fourteen degrees.
