Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- The Mudeford Run is the hazard. It is narrow, it ebbs hard, and being carried into it is a serious situation.
- Christchurch has a double high water with a long stand — the tide sits almost still for hours, which is either useful or confusing depending on how you read it.
- Avon Beach is a busy family beach with enforced summer bathing zones. Ride the eastern end towards Highcliffe if it's crowded.

The spot
Avon Beach is a gently shelving sandy beach between Christchurch and Highcliffe, with Mudeford Quay and the entrance to Christchurch Harbour at its western end. It is a friendly enough spot in the right conditions, and there is a slipway and grass at the Quay.
The Run — the narrow harbour entrance — is what riders need to know about. The ebb through it is exceptionally fast, and being carried into it is not something you ride your way out of. Christchurch also has a pronounced double high water with a long stand, so the tide behaves differently here than the simple curves most apps show.
