The spot

Aberdovey sits at the mouth of the Dyfi estuary on the Meirionnydd coast. It offers a long, shallow, sandy beach at lower tides and — thanks to the Dyfi valley and the hills of southern Snowdonia behind — one of the more dependable afternoon sea breezes in Wales.

The estuary entrance is what to avoid. The Dyfi bar shifts, is not reliably charted, and the ebb through the channel runs hard. Stay on the beach side. The estuary itself is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and internationally important for birds, so keep out of the marked areas.
