The spot
Aberavon is a long, straight, sandy beach behind a low promenade, with more space than anywhere else in South Wales and clean wind across the whole of it. On a south-westerly it works from mid tide down, and there is enough room for schools, independents and everyone else at once.
The eastern end is where care is needed: the River Neath entrance and Port Talbot's bulk-carrier harbour both sit there, with strong streams. It is a working industrial coast and the water quality reflects that, but for consistency and space it is hard to beat in Wales.
