Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • The Street is the whole story here. Learn where it is before you ride, and never walk out along it on a rising tide.
  • Whitstable is a north-wind specialist. In a southerly it is offshore and flat calm at the beach while the forecast says 25 knots.
  • Parking at Beach Walk is pay-and-display and small; the overflow is the length of Tankerton seafront.
  • The town is a weekend destination in its own right — expect the beach to be busy with non-kiters even on a windy day.

Hazards

Most serious first. The level is in words as well as colour.

  • high

shallow sandbar 'The Street' — a half-mile shingle spit that emerges at low water. Easy to run aground on and easy to be cut off by the returning tide.

  • medium

shipping Oyster beds and fishing gear offshore, plus commercial traffic in the estuary channels.

  • medium

crowds Extremely busy in summer — the beach is narrow at high water and shared with swimmers.

The spot

Whitstable faces due north across the Thames Estuary, which makes it almost unique on the south-eastern coast: it picks up northerlies with nothing in the way, and because the estuary is shallow and enclosed there is essentially no swell to contend with. On a hard northerly it is genuinely one of the best flatwater beaches in the country.

The complication is The Street — a natural shingle spit running about half a mile straight out from Tankerton Slopes. It is submerged at high water and fully walkable at low, which means it is invisible exactly when you are most likely to ride into it. Learn where it sits before your first session, and treat the returning tide with respect; people are cut off on it every summer.

Because the spot is so heavily used, the local community has cleared the launch areas of obstacles and marked out where to set up. It is a well-run, sociable beach — and correspondingly busy.
