Location & launch
Know before you go.
- Launch
- The harbour beach opposite the Sandbanks Hotel, where Shore Road meets Banks Road — Poole Harbour Commissioners' preferred kite area. Riding, launching and landing are banned inside the 50 m buoyed strip along the Shore Road sea wall.
- Wind
- S · SSW · SW · WSW · W · WNW · NW · NNW · N winds work here.
- Tide
- Mid tide gives the best combination of water depth and space. Poole's tidal range is small, so the tide constrains less here than almost anywhere else in the UK.
The shaded area shows the wind directions recorded as working here. It is not a permitted kite zone or a safe launch boundary. Check local signs.

Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- You need a permit from Poole Harbour Commissioners to kitesurf inside the harbour. Get it before you go — it is not something you sort out on the beach.
- Whitley Lake is the designated area. Kitesurfers are prohibited from the swimming zones on the main Sandbanks Blue Flag beach and BCP Council enforces it.
- The harbour entrance ebbs ferociously. Do not drift towards the gap between Sandbanks and Studland.
- Poole's tidal range is tiny — around two metres on springs — so unlike most UK spots the tide is rarely the thing that stops you.
- In a westerly the houses and trees on the peninsula make the first hundred metres genuinely gusty. It cleans up once you're out.
- Summer parking at Sandbanks is expensive and full by mid-morning. Hamworthy Park on the other side of the harbour is a cheaper, quieter alternative.

Tide rule
Mid tide gives the best combination of water depth and space. Poole's tidal range is small, so the tide constrains less here than almost anywhere else in the UK. Poole has a distinctive double high water with a long stand — the tide barely moves for several hours.
Sea breeze · May–Aug
Typically fills around 12:00.
Poole's harbour thermal is modest compared with Camber's — the surrounding land is smaller and more wooded.

Hazards

- high
shipping The Swash Channel and the Sandbanks chain ferry route run close by. Brownsea Island ferries and a large yacht fleet use the harbour constantly.
- high
current The harbour entrance between Sandbanks and Studland runs extremely fast on the ebb — one of the strongest tidal streams on the south coast.
- high
crowds Sandbanks is one of the busiest beaches in England in summer, with enforced swimming zones.
- medium
wind shadow Trees and large houses on the peninsula make the wind gusty close to shore in westerlies.
- medium
wildlife Poole Harbour is a SSSI, SPA and Ramsar site with overwintering birds; parts of the harbour are seasonally sensitive.

The spot
Whitley Lake is the reason people drive to Dorset. It sits inside Poole Harbour — one of the largest natural harbours in the world — which means acres of waist-deep water, no swell whatsoever, and a tidal range of around two metres on springs rather than the six or seven you get further east. For learning and for freestyle progression it is close to ideal.
The access is formal. Poole Harbour Commissioners require a kitesurfing permit for the harbour, with a code of conduct attached, and it is not something you can sort out on the beach. Separately, BCP Council enforces the swimming zones on the main Sandbanks Blue Flag beach; kitesurfers are prohibited from them entirely.
Two things catch people out. The harbour entrance between Sandbanks and Studland ebbs at a serious rate and should be treated as a no-go. And in a westerly the trees and large houses on the Sandbanks peninsula make the first hundred metres off the beach noticeably gusty — it cleans up once you're out on the water.
