Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • Morecambe Bay has the fastest incoming tide in Britain and areas of genuine quicksand. This is not an exaggeration and people have died here.
  • Walney is a National Nature Reserve with seabird colonies at both ends of the island. Stay out of them.
  • Almost nobody around. Bring everything you might need and tell someone where you are.
  • Roa Island on the eastern side is the sheltered alternative when the west side is too big.

The spot

Walney Island shelters Barrow-in-Furness from the Irish Sea and offers long, empty beaches on its western shore. The wind is clean, the parking is free, and you will often have the place to yourself.

Morecambe Bay is the reason to be careful. Its incoming tide is the fastest in Britain, parts of the flats are genuine quicksand, and people have died in both. Do not be a long way out on a rising tide. The island is also a National Nature Reserve with breeding seabird colonies at each end — stay clear of them. Roa Island on the sheltered eastern side is the fallback when the west is too big.
