Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • Vatersay has two beaches back to back across a narrow isthmus — one Atlantic, one sheltered. Whichever way the wind blows, one of them works.
  • Reached by causeway from Barra. Barra's airport is a beach and flights are timed around the tide.
  • Full Atlantic exposure on the west side. The east beach is the sheltered option.

The spot

Vatersay is the most southerly inhabited island in the Outer Hebrides, joined to Barra by a causeway. Its village sits on a narrow isthmus with a beach on either side — one facing the open Atlantic, one sheltered — which means that whatever the wind is doing, one of them is rideable.

The west beach takes full Atlantic swell and has real rips. Getting here means a ferry to Barra, or a flight onto Barra's beach airport where the timetable is set by the tide. There is nothing in the way of facilities. It is as remote as British kitesurfing gets, and correspondingly extraordinary.
