Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • You need a permit. Kernow Kitesurf Club administers it — around £5 a year for KKC members, £10 for BKSA members, £20 for everyone else. Sort it before you travel.
  • The ebb out of the Hayle estuary is genuinely dangerous and has caught out experienced riders. Do not ride the channel on an outgoing tide.
  • No riding two hours either side of high water.
  • It only really works on N and NE. Do not drive here on a south-westerly forecast.
  • Flat water on a par with a Brazilian lagoon on the right tide, with waves available further out — which is why it has the reputation it does.

The spot

The Bluff sits at the mouth of the River Hayle, reached over the dunes from Harveys Towans. On the right tide and a north-easterly it produces flat water that local riders compare to Brazilian lagoons, with rideable waves available further out.

Three things gate it. You need an annual permit administered by Kernow Kitesurf Club — a few pounds, but not something to sort out on the beach. The spot only really works on north and north-east; other directions are offshore or shadowed. And the ebb out of the estuary is exceptionally strong, has caught out very competent riders, and means no session two hours either side of high water.

Get those three right and it is arguably the best flatwater spot in the South West.
