Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- Access is via a private toll road with a charge per vehicle — bring cash or expect a card machine that may not work.
- It is a nature reserve. Keep off the dunes entirely and give the roped-off nesting areas a very wide berth.
- Almost no facilities. Nearest anything is Sandwich, ten minutes back inland.

The spot
Sandwich Bay is where east Kent riders go when everywhere else is packed. A long, quiet stretch of sand and shingle running behind Royal St George's and Prince's, it faces east into the Downs and works on the directions that leave Whitstable flat.
The trade-offs are access and facilities. You reach it down a private estate toll road with a per-vehicle charge, and once there you will find no toilets, no café, and no one to help you land a kite. It is also a National Nature Reserve — keep entirely off the dunes and away from the roped nesting areas. Tidal streams along this stretch, between the shore and the Goodwin Sands, run harder than they look.
