The spot
Sands of Luce at Sandhead sits in a shallow, south-facing bay in Dumfries and Galloway. It is warmer than anywhere else in Scotland — the sea can reach sixteen degrees in August — and the water is shallow and forgiving.
The complication is the MOD West Freugh air weapons range, which covers a large part of Luce Bay. Check range activity before you go out. Otherwise it is quiet, free to park at, and one of the friendlier introductions to Scottish kitesurfing.
