Local rules, hazards & spot guide

Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • This is a national sailing venue with Olympic squads training on it. Learn the racing areas and keep out of them.
  • Effectively tide-independent, which makes it the most plannable spot in southern England — you can commit to a session days ahead.
  • The Isle of Portland shadows the southern side of the harbour in a southerly. Ride the northern shore in those directions.
  • Chesil Beach is the other side of the same strip of land, five minutes' drive. If you want waves rather than flat water, go over the ridge.

The harbour is large enough that the breakwaters shelter the water without killing the wind — one of the reasons it was chosen as an Olympic venue.

Tide rule

Effectively tide-independent — the harbour holds water at all states. Dorset's double tide and small range mean the tide is rarely a factor here.

Sea breeze · May–Aug

Typically fills around 12:00.

Portland's sea breeze is reliable enough that the 2012 Olympic sailing schedule was built around it.

The spot

Portland Harbour is enclosed by Victorian breakwaters and sheltered from the west by Chesil Beach and the Isle of Portland. The result is a large body of genuinely flat water that works in almost any wind direction, at any state of tide — a combination that barely exists anywhere else in the UK.

It is also a national sailing venue. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy sits on Osprey Quay, Olympic squads train here, and the 2012 Games sailing was held on this water partly because the summer sea breeze is so dependable. Learn where the racing areas are and stay out of them.

The one directional weakness is southerly wind, where the Isle of Portland shadows the southern half of the harbour — ride the northern shore instead. And if you want waves rather than glass, Chesil Beach is on the other side of the same ridge, five minutes away.
