The spot
Murlough and Newcastle sit at the western end of Dundrum Bay with the Mourne Mountains rising directly behind. Slieve Donard, at 850 metres, is immediately inland — which makes the setting spectacular and the wind treacherous in any westerly direction, where the lee turbulence off the mountain is severe.
Southerly and south-easterly are the directions that work. Murlough itself is Ireland's first National Nature Reserve, protecting a six-thousand-year-old dune system, and beach access is via marked boardwalks only. When the wind is west, Tyrella on the other side of the bay is the sensible choice.
