Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- Knee-to-waist deep for a good 300 metres — one of the most forgiving learner beaches in the South East.
- The two-hour window either side of high water is a hard stop: there is simply no beach left.
- Chalk ledges appear at the low-water mark. Wear boots and know where they are.

The spot
Minnis Bay sits at the western end of Birchington and is the gentlest of the north Kent kite beaches. The water stays knee-to-waist deep for roughly 300 metres, the wind arrives clean off the estuary, and there is a large grass area behind the promenade for rigging up.
The only real restriction is tidal: for about two hours either side of high water there is no usable beach and the spot is effectively closed. Outside that window it is as forgiving as the South East gets. Watch for the chalk reef ledges that appear towards low water — they are hard, sharp and not always obvious.
