The spot
Llangennith runs the length of Rhossili Bay on the western side of the Gower, three miles of sand facing west-north-west into the Atlantic. It is the swell magnet of South Wales and a genuinely powerful beach.
It faces west-north-west and works from south round to north-north-west, with the prevailing south-westerly cross-onshore and powerful. Easterlies and south-easterlies are offshore here. Rips are strong, particularly towards Burry Holms at the northern end and Worm's Head at the southern. Both are tidal islands, both cut off with the tide, and people are stranded on them every year.
Oxwich Bay on the sheltered southern side of the peninsula is twenty minutes away when this is out of hand.
Nearby alternatives
Other launches around Gower Peninsula, with different conditions.
- Oxwich Bay
The Gower's sheltered option — flat water when Llangennith is unmanageable.
- Broughton Bay
Flat sand and fewer people, at the corner of the Gower.
