The spot

Llandudno West Shore sits on the western side of the Great Orme, with a wide sandy beach at lower tides and a promenade behind. For riders in Manchester and Cheshire it is the closest proper saltwater.

The Great Orme is the complication. A two-hundred-metre limestone headland immediately north-east of the beach, it shadows and disturbs the wind badly from those directions. Westerly is what makes the spot work. The Conwy estuary at the southern end runs strong streams, and with over seven metres of spring range there is a lot of tide to read.
