Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- Kite Beach at Beachlands is free. CBK at the western end charges to launch but gives you water safety cover and flatter water — they are different spots, not different ends of the same one.
- The Solent has a double high water. Do not plan a session off a single high-tide time from a generic app.
- The West Winner sandbar is 800m out. It creates the lagoon everyone comes for, and it strands people who walk out on a rising tide.
- Both harbour entrances — Langstone to the west and Chichester to the east — run very strong tidal streams. Do not drift towards either.
- The private beach at the western end requires HKA membership and proof of BKSA insurance. You cannot ride there just because you parked nearby.

Tide rule
The sandbar and lagoon appear from mid to low tide — that is the window worth having. The Solent has a double high water. Standard tide apps often mislead here; check a Portsmouth curve rather than a simple high/low time.
Sea breeze · May–Aug
Typically fills around 12:00.
The Solent sea breeze is a real feature here but is often fighting the double tide rather than a strong gradient.

- high
shipping Langstone and Chichester Harbour entrances either side, plus heavy Solent yacht traffic.
- high
current Very strong tidal streams through the harbour entrances at each end of the island.
- high
crowds The busiest kite beach in the UK on a good weekend.
- medium
shallow sandbar The West Winner bar sits roughly 800m offshore and is walkable at low water — easy to run aground on and easy to be cut off by the flood.

The spot
Hayling is arguably where British kitesurfing started and it remains the busiest beach in the country. Kite Beach at central Beachlands is the free public launch — no membership, no fee, and correspondingly packed on a good weekend.
The draw is the West Winner sandbar, about 800 metres offshore. It generates rideable waves on its seaward side and, from mid to low tide, forms a shallow lagoon behind it that is superb for progression. That same bar strands people who walk out on a rising tide, so know the state before you go.
Two things confuse visitors. First, the Solent's double high water means a generic tide app will mislead you — use a Portsmouth curve. Second, CBK at the western end is a different spot with different rules: it charges to launch, offers water safety cover and flatter water, and the private beach there requires HKA membership plus proof of BKSA insurance.
