Local rules, hazards & spot guide

Need to know

The things that catch people out here.

  • Wear boots. There is glass from an old tip near the Rec Ground and extremely sharp shells further out — this is the injury that happens here.
  • The Exmouth Wildlife Refuge runs 15 September to 31 December and is marked by yellow buoys. Dawlish Warren's refuge is closed all year. Stay out of both.
  • North-westerly is the money direction. South-westerly works but comes over the town and is gusty.
  • It's shallow enough to stand almost everywhere at high water, and just a few inches deep in places as the tide drops. Time your session around the high.
  • Big grass rigging area right by the water, toilets and showers at the windsurfing centre, town three minutes away — the practicalities here are better than almost anywhere in the UK.

North-westerly is the classic direction and gives flat, clean water. A southerly comes in straight off the sea; anything with east in it blows gustily off the town and is not rideable. South-westerly works but is noticeably gusty coming over the town.

Tide rule

Best two hours either side of high water. If you're learning, aim for three to four hours before high water. Rideable at other states if you're willing to walk. As the tide drops you can find yourself in a few inches of water a long way from the car.

Sea breeze · May–Aug

Typically fills around 12:00.

The Exe valley and Haldon hills behind generate a useful afternoon sea breeze on clear days.

  • medium

shallow sandbar Sandbars appear as the tide drops; easy to hit at speed.

  • medium

current The Exe ebbs strongly through the estuary mouth towards Dawlish Warren.

  • medium

tidal cutoff The estuary drains fast and far. Easy to end up stranded on a bank.

The spot

The Duckpond is the tidal basin at the mouth of the Exe, and it is the reason Exmouth has the strongest kitesurfing scene in the South West. The water is flat to lightly choppy, you are within your depth over most of it, and there is a large grassy rigging area immediately beside the water with toilets, showers and a café within a couple of minutes' walk.

North-westerly is the classic direction and produces the flattest water. A southerly comes in straight off the sea; anything with east in it blows gustily off the town and is not rideable. South-westerly works but comes over the town and is noticeably gusty. Aim for the two hours either side of high water — if you are learning, three to four hours before high is the sweet spot.

Two things reliably catch people out. First, footwear: there is glass from an old tip near the Rec Ground and extremely sharp shells further out, and boots are not optional. Second, the wildlife refuges — Exmouth's runs from 15 September to 31 December and is marked by yellow buoys, while Dawlish Warren's is closed year-round.
