Local rules, hazards & spot guide
Need to know
The things that catch people out here.
- You are at the mouth of one of Europe's busiest commercial waterways. Large vessels have right of way and cannot manoeuvre — stay out of the channel.
- Fawley refinery is directly across the water; its jetty traffic is constant.
- The stream round Calshot Spit is strong and catches people who drift downwind without noticing.
- The activity centre on site means facilities and other people about, which is a genuine safety plus.

The spot
Calshot sits on the shingle spit where Southampton Water opens into the Solent. It is sheltered from swell, has an activity centre with proper facilities on site, and works across an unusually wide range of directions.
The qualifier is the shipping. This is the entrance to one of Europe's busiest commercial ports, with cruise ships, container vessels and Fawley refinery traffic all passing within sight of the launch. Large vessels have right of way, cannot manoeuvre, and operate inside a formal precautionary area. Add a strong tidal stream round the spit and it becomes a spot that rewards paying attention.
