The spot
Ainsdale is a formally designated windsport beach on the Sefton coast, running roughly six miles between Formby and Southport. Vehicle access onto the sand is permitted in marked areas, the sand is firm, and — unusually for anywhere in Britain, let alone a coast with an eight-metre tidal range — it is rideable at all states of tide.
That combination makes it the most plannable spot in the North West. It is shared with buggies, landboards and land yachts as well as kites and wings, so there is a culture of giving people room. The dunes behind are an SSSI supporting some of England's last natterjack toad and red squirrel populations; stay off them.
