The spot
Aberdeen Beach runs two miles along the Esplanade between the mouths of the Dee and the Don. It is consistently windy, takes real North Sea swell, and is about as accessible as a Scottish beach gets.
The harbour at the southern end is one of the busiest in Britain for offshore supply vessels, and both river mouths run strong streams. The water is among the coldest on the British mainland, rarely rising above thirteen degrees. Balmedie, ten minutes north, is quieter and cleaner if you want space.
